Basseterre, St. Kitts; The Government of St. Kitts has launched a major infrastructure campaign, investing over EC $80 million into the upgrade and expansion of roads across the island. The work includes resurfacing existing roads, installing proper drainage, and constructing new roads in communities that have long needed better access.
In the Sunset Reef area, the road has now been resurfaced and fitted with adequate drainage infrastructure. This upgrade improves entry into a key southern coastal zone known for luxury residences and development potential. While the work was relatively simple in scope, the impact is direct—improved access, less erosion, and safer travel conditions.
The Sunset Reef upgrade is just one part of a wider island-wide effort. According to official government sources, road improvement works are taking place in multiple areas, including:
Bay Road East (Basseterre)
Shadwell
Market Street
Boyds Village
Fortlands
C.A. Paul Southwell Industrial Site
George Street in Newtown
Infirmary Road
Bourkes in Sandy Point
In some of these areas, new concrete roads are being installed where proper infrastructure did not previously exist. The goal is to increase connectivity between neighborhoods, ease transportation burdens for residents, and support growth in housing, tourism, and small business.
The Ministry of Public Infrastructure has said these works will continue in phases, with a focus on both high-traffic urban zones and underserved rural areas. The government has also committed to ensuring that the upgrades are not just cosmetic, but durable, using concrete in many areas to extend road lifespan and reduce long-term maintenance costs.
At SKN Real Estate, we see these upgrades as more than public works, they’re signals. Better roads tell us where government attention is going and where market opportunities are opening up. Infrastructure influences not only how people move, but where they invest, build, and live.
We’ll continue to monitor and report on these changes. Because in real estate, the road to progress is sometimes literal.
